The frozen north is known as one of the most abundant areas for salmon and is ideal for fishing trips.

This is a direct result of the outrageous tides along the west coast and the spill of ocean flows that establish an ideal climate for rearing thousands of baitfish.

It is also said to be perhaps the best place to go to look for monster King Salmon, the largest species of salmon fish.

The most ideal way to get these goliath salmon (in salt water) is to savate them or to calculate a guided line brought into the water.

The search for king goliath salmon can be done year round (especially in Seward).

There are some types of salmon that are highly sought after, these are:

1. The King Salmon (Chinook) is the largest of these many species.

Its weight is midway between 20 and 40 pounds, with the heaviest recorded being 112 pounds, and it can be up to 3-4″ long. It has a blue-green back that is lightly spotted.

The normal life expectancy of a Chinook salmon is about 5-7 years.

Its tissues can range in shade from ivory white to dark red.

Normal names for this species of salmon include tyee, springs, mouth/lords chinook and tule.

2. Silver salmon (Coho) are also a bit more modest, with a normal load of 8 to 12 pounds.

These species lean toward small streams in which they produce between the long periods of July through November.

3. Sockeye salmon are also the most sought after of all the species because of their dark red tissue and firm, rich flavor.

When searching for salmon in Alaska, one must be exceptional with the right equipment (and wear the right clothes).

Below is some of the equipment/gear required and tips for trouble-free fishing:

  • You should be dressed in layers of comfortable clothing (no bulky clothing as it can interfere with the fishing action).
  • Over these ordinary clothes, waterproof boots and gloves are equally important to ensure that you stay evaporated because, after a trap, some fish can fight the biggest battles.
  •  Armadas or cruise ships that offer fishing services are usually equipped with lures.
  • An assistant on a cruise ship guarantees that even novice anglers will take part in the movement by giving illustrations of installed accidents. They normally set a trap for the visitor and enlighten them on where specific types of fish can thrive for a particular fishery.
