Basic aquarium plant care

Most people who buy an aquarium do so for its visual appeal. It is known that people spend more money on the decoration of their aquarium than on the fish and the aquarium itself. It is good when buying these decorative pieces to think about buying pieces that are both pleasing to the eye, but also useful tools for balancing and maintaining your aquarium.

How do you grow aquarium plants for beginners?Do aquarium plants prefer sand or gravel?Do aquarium plants need direct sunlight?

Before resorting to plastic green pieces embedded in the gravel, consider using live plants. Aquatic plants are functional in many ways. Most importantly, living plants add oxygen to the water and help maintain water chemistry.

They also serve as a place where beneficial bacteria can grow. These bacteria are essential and help break down waste in the aquarium. Overall, using live plants helps keep your aquarium clean and healthy while adding the perfect visual effect.

Once the decision to use live plants is made, you need to familiarize yourself with how to grow and care for these plants. The key to growing healthy live plants is the balance between lighting and nutrients in the aquarium. It is best to use more lighting than what comes with standard hoods.

The single bulb that comes with a hood is not enough to promote healthy plant growth. When you add extra lighting, be sure to offset it with extra nutrients to stimulate plant growth and at the same time reduce the chance of algae buildup. Algae-eating fish are an excellent supplement. They will keep algae levels low and will not harm living plants.

The decision to use live plants should be made first and steps should be taken to prepare the tank for later use. It is suggested that you add all of your plants at the start and let them become established. Doing this will eliminate the chances of the algae using the added nutrients and additional lighting.

Fast-growing plants are recommended, as well as some floating plants. Some types of fish, such as catfish, like to shelter from direct light. Floating plants will allow them to escape and add a nice effect to the design and decoration of the aquarium.

Once your plants are established and growing well, add the fish of your choice and enjoy a beautiful aquarium. When keeping live plants in the aquarium, it is important to care for them as you would any other plant. Always remove decaying leaves as they tend to drain nutrients from healthy parts of the plant.

Dying roots will rot under the gravel. Be sure to remove any part of the plant that dies or looks diseased. Many plants sown in the gravel reproduce. Any new plants can be taken out and placed in a different part of the aquarium. If you are using a live plant that is primarily a stem plant, try removing the lower leaves. These lower leaves tend not to receive the amount of light needed to stay healthy.

Using live plants will certainly help create a beautiful aquarium that is pleasing to the eye and provides a happy and healthy environment for your fish. Remember to clean your aquarium regularly and inspect the plants weekly to check that they are not decomposing. Regular maintenance is the key to maintaining a beautiful and healthy aquarium.
