Convince a Nervous Cat

When you first got your cat, you probably imagined a cuddly little ball of fur, ready to accept any affection you gave it. However, some cats are very shy by nature. These hide and are afraid of you if you look at them. Some suggestions to help you are listed below.

Win Over a Nervous Cat

It is completely normal for a cat to be shy and cautious during the first few days in its new home. The more contact a cat has had with humans, the less shy it will be. Give your cat some space and don't force things. It is very likely that he will approach you as soon as he is sure of his new surroundings.

One way to gradually accustom a nervous cat to petting is to wrap it gently in a thick towel, to prevent it from scratching you, and to gently stroke its head. Speak softly to your cat as you do this. Set aside a time each day to perform this bonding ritual, and your shy cat may end up trusting you enough to pet her without the towel.

Cunning can often work wonders with nervous cats. Try offering a healthy and tempting treat, if your cat is hungry enough to overcome its fear and stay still to eat its treat, stroke it gently, don't make any sudden movements! You may have to persevere, but often your pet will eventually accept and appreciate your petting.

Never lose patience and remember that your nervous cat isn't rejecting you, it's just a protective reaction to something that has made her suspicious of humans. Love and persistence often win out, and you will be rewarded with your cat's affection.
