Training Your Pet Parrot

Parrots are wonderful pets. You will quickly find that these birds are extremely intelligent and their ability to learn makes them fun to train. Keep in mind that any animal that shows signs of high intelligence can easily become bored. Your job, then, is to train your parrot and spend the time necessary to make your bird a wonderful pet. It takes time and patience to train a parrot, but with proper training, your parrot will provide you with many years of friendship.

Can you discipline a parrot? What is the fastest way to tame a parrot? Can parrots be trained to poop in one place?

You can train your parrot by following a few steps. When school is open for your parrot, it's always best to take it out of its cage and train it in a small, quiet space. Your parrot will be better able to stay attentive and retain information when in new surroundings.

The next thing to do is eliminate all distractions in your home. If your parrot is distracted during training, it will not learn well. This means turning off the radio, television, and maybe even the telephone. Also, remember that parrots are very much like children. They have a short attention span, so keeping training sessions short is recommended.

Also, try to plan your parrot's training time around his schedule, not yours. Feeding time is always a good time for training, as your parrot will be happy and attentive. Your parrot will also appreciate the many compliments.

Even if you find that you haven't had much success, don't let your parrot see your stress level rise. This will make the experience unpleasant for your bird and will make it harder to interest him in learning in the future.

When you're ready to teach him a new trick, your parrot will respond well to treats and praise. Just remember that every pet responds better to positive praise than to negative punishment.

Try to avoid punishing your parrot, even if it misbehaves. Ignoring this behavior is your best chance to train your parrot. Parrots don't understand punishment or negative reinforcement. In fact, if you react to your parrot's bad behavior, your parrot may see it as positive attention.

Keep in mind that while your parrot loves treats as a reward, try to accentuate the positives and encourage good behavior with lots of praise and playtime. Otherwise, your parrot may parrot performs the tricks you ask of it only when a food reward is available.

Repetition is the key to successful parrot training. Repeating these basic steps until your pet "gets it" is the best way to train your parrot. This works for both basic orders and advanced towers. If you just got your parrot, start with very simple tricks, like teaching your parrot to sit on your finger on command.

Find a word for each trick and use it every time you practice. Most importantly, do not force your parrot to train. If you find that your parrot is tired or uninterested, stop and try again another time.

As your parrot learns commands and tricks, you can begin to bring your training session closer to the bird's cage. As he improves, he will feel comfortable in his crate and in the bustle of your home. Birds learn quickly in most cases, and sometimes just by listening when not in training, which can embarrass you if they learn something inappropriate.

The training of a parrot is not for everyone because it requires a lot of patience and time. You need to love your bird and have plenty of time and dedication to make this partnership worthwhile. With patience and love, you will get a fantastic, well-behaved pet that will be with you for a very long time.
