Domestic pets: the cat character, cat personality

Breed, experience, and living environment are some of the factors that shape a cat's personality. The latter is a complex concept because it contains many parameters.

Like everyone else, cats have different personalities, but regardless of breed, age, and gender, certain traits always exist in everyone. There are many assumptions about cat personalities: males are friendlier, tricolor females are more aggressive... but what exactly?

The character of a cat: what is it?

All cat owners will agree that every cat is unique, but it is possible to list some common personality traits among our many house cats:

Independence: Perhaps the most well-known character trait in cats.

This does not mean that he does not have an emotional bond with his owner, quite the contrary, but cats are able to manage independently, unlike dogs. He really doesn't need an owner, a cat needs territory.

Territory: The cat is attached to its territory, it does not like to change it and protects it with all its might!

Habits: A cat is an animal that has a habit and does not like to change it. He has his little routine, in the morning, he comes to wake you up, offer you a meal, and go out... always in the same order. Cats also do not like to change the environment in which they live. Moving furniture... very little for him.

Curious: but not necessarily adventurous. Cats love to sneak under the curtains to see what's going on outside!

Food Novices: Cats love food variations (and only food). He loves different textures, tastes and smells.

Cuddles: Even the craziest cats love to be cuddled, but beware, not just anytime, and not just anyone!

What factors affect a cat's personality?

Although cats all share common traits, certain factors shape their personality. Then we can mention: race, life in youth and experimentation with everyone.

Breed is an important trigger, but note that each cat's personality is equally important. Cat breeders put a lot of effort into selecting felines with balanced, easy-going personalities.

Animals with behavioral problems (aggressiveness, fear, etc.) are generally kept away from the farm. Let's not make a general example, but it is true that certain breeds of cats are known for their docile and adorable dispositions, others are known to be active and lively, and even to be easy to talk to! Here are some examples:

  • Soft and cute cats: British Shorthair, Ragdoll, St. Birman and even Somali.
  • Active cats: Oriental, Bengal, Abyssinian and Siamese.

There are many breeds of cats that can have personality traits. In any case, when you decide to adopt an animal, take the time to understand its personality, as well as its needs (brushing, activities, etc.).
